You will explore the various types of dementia. You will have an in depth understanding of the progression of dementia.

You will be exposed to and be prepared for the common responsive behaviours associated with dementia. You will be provided first hand knowledge of what it feels like to have many of the symptoms common in middle to late stage dementia through a virtual reality experience. Students will learn how to understand the thinking, responses and behaviours that may be anticipated with this dynamic type of mental health issue.

All topics will be covered in both augmented reality format and in the classroom. This course focuses on developing the empathy needed to work with those with dementia. This micro-credential would also be a beneficial course for Family Caregivers as well.

The Virtual Dementia Brain

Experience dementia symptoms including unintentional movements, sudden sound and visual impairment. The experience gives users a sense of how to help those dealing with these sensory impairments.

Admission Requirements:

  • Government-Issued Photo ID
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent
  • Mature student ,18 years or older.
  • IELTS 6.0 (B2) or equivalent *
    *For international students only
Duration:  Total length of the program is 40 hours. 10 hours synchronous learning and 30 hours asynchronous learning. 
 
Technical Specs: Synchronous classes are taught with a Nurse Educator. Asynchronous classes offer an online experience utilizing Augmented Reality, 3D Models, Videos and Virtual Simulation. A desktop or laptop is recommended. VR Goggles are welcomed for a full, richer experience. If you do not have VR Goggles, you can complete the tasks on a laptop or a desktop. IBT College provides technical support. 
 
First Day: On your First Day, you will meet with your Nurse Educator who will walk you through the virtual learning experience.

  4. Staging Dementia’s Progression
  5. End of Life Considerations
  6. Responsive Behaviours; why and how to respond
  7. What can be done? How can we help?
Certificate: Upon successful completion of the program you will receive an IBT College Dementia Care Certificate. A Dementia Care Certificate is in-demand now by many employers seeking Home Support Workers and Personal Support Workers in Ontario. It is a strongly recommended to upgrade your skills in this area.

Virtual Classes – 2pm to 4pm, Mondays & Thursdays

Cohort 2 Schedule:
October 24 – November 11, 2022
Virtual Classes – 7am to 9am, Mondays & Thursdays

Cohort 3 Schedule:
November 14 – December 2, 2022
Virtual Classes – 7pm to 9pm, Mondays & Thursdays
